LayerWise' AM Service appeared in the September 2011 issue of the German CAD-CAM Report publication. It concerns a scaled supersonic turbine blade model that was built as a single part, complete with internal cooling cavity and fine instrumentation channels. Von Karman scientists use the AM blade to research pulsated cooling as a means to reduce the intensity of shock waves. This opens up opportunities for jet engine and power plant turbine manufacturers to achieve higher turbine expansions, resulting in more compact engines and reduced development costs.
